SYM Sailing Club is facing eviction from Stubbers Activity Centre, its home since 1982.
SYM is a Royal Yachting Association (RYA) recognised training centre which teaches people of all ages and abilities to sail, safely and affordably. The Club is unique as it is managed by volunteers, has its own fleet of 35 boats and all instructors are RYA qualified.
As a community based club, SYM has helped Cubs, Scouts, Guides, an Autistic Society group, GCSE students, Duke of Edinburgh candidates and trained young sailors to represent Havering in the London Youth Games. Learning to sail helps build personal confidence, independence, diverse thinking and supports good mental health whilst being an environmentally friendly sport.
The club is actively fighting this eviction, engaging local MPs and councillors, and launching a legal challenge to preserve this valuable resource for Havering and Essex. We currently have no income, SYM relies on membership fees and running RYA training courses, if you would like to help us raise money to cover our ongoing running costs and potential legal costs to fight eviction, please donate here:-
The SYM sailing club is a friendly independent Sunday sailing club that was started in 1982. The club was originally aimed at young people but now provides instruction for both young and older members making it the ideal family club. We are able to offer enough equipment for the whole family to come and have a go every Sunday between March and November from 9 ’til 4. So have a look around our website and feel free to drop in any Sunday for more information.
